The Iowa Medical Society (IMS) is the professional association for Iowa MDs and DOs. The core purpose of the IMS is to assure the highest quality health care in Iowa through our role as physician and patient advocate. IMS membership consisted of 5,290 physicians as of September 30, 2010. To qualify for membership, a physician must have the appropriate education and hold an Iowa medical license. There are 92 county medical societies in Iowa (several are two-county organizations). Many IMS members also belong to the national American Medical Association (AMA) and their county societies.
The IMS was established in 1850 in Burlington. The society's journal, Iowa Medicine, has been published since 1911 and is mailed to active and resident IMS members. The magazine explores medical socioeconomic issues.
IMS headquarters is the administrative base for several related organizations such as IMS Services, IMS Alliance, IMS Foundation and the Iowa Medical Political Action Committee (IMPAC). A 19-member Board of Directors is responsible for the general strategic direction of the IMS. IMS staff are listed on our IMS Staff page.
