The Iowa Board of Medicine (IBM) has statutory responsibility for examination, licensure and discipline of MD and DO physicians practicing medicine in Iowa. The IBM promulgates and enforces administrative rules to carry out its licensing and disciplinary responsibilities. The executive director of the IBM is Mark Bowden.

There are ten members on the board; seven physicians, five of whom must be licensed MDs and two of whom must be licensed DOs, and three consumers. Board members are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate. Members serve three-year terms. A maximum of nine years may be served through the reappointment process. Physician members of the IBM include: Janice Galli, DO, Sioux City; Analisa Haberman, DO, Mason City; Colleen Stockdale, MD, Iowa City; Siroos Shirazi, MD, Iowa City; Jeffery Snyder, MD, Council Bluffs; Joyce Vista-Wayne Ottumwa; and Rod Zeitler, MD, Iowa City. Consumer members of the IBM are Tom Drew, JD, Des Moines, Ambreen Mian, Ames, and Paul Thurlow, Dubuque.

The Iowa Physician Health Committee (IPHC) was established in 1996 by the IBM as directed by the General Assembly to address the unique needs of physicians dealing with impairment issues. The IPHC is a confidential, voluntary, self-report program that evaluates and monitors the recovery of physicians struggling with alcohol or drug abuse, neuropsychiatric disorders or physical disabilities. Physicians may self-report to the IPHC and the Board, itself, has authority to refer a physician against whom a complaint has been filed to the IPHC. Physicians are evaluated by the IPHC and if it is determined the physician has an impairment, the IPHC then develops a contract setting forth compliance requirements for the physician. Reports are made by the IPHC to the IBM if the impaired physician fails to comply with the IPHC's contract terms and the physician is then subject to discipline. For information about the IPHC, contact Deb Anglin at (515) 281-6491 and/or consult the IBM's Web site.
